Think back to the first time you ever got on the World Wide Web. Back in the mid-1990’s, the Internet was in its infancy and most companies had no idea how they might use this new technology. (In fact a lot of companies were so oblivious to the potential power of the Internet as a business tool that they sat by while entrepreneur’s gobbled up their valuable domain names.) For most corporate web sites back then, web design wasn’t much more than a couple graphics files and, maybe, an e-mail link.
As more and more people became familiar with the Internet and its seemingly infinite uses, corporate web sites have become far more complex. These days, even the smallest businesses are using their web sites to reach and develop a customer base that’s far beyond what they could hope to reach without the Internet.
But many businesses that once had a great sense of how to use the Internet have failed to keep pace with technology and their antiquated web sites speak to that fact. This is definitely not the image that any company wants to project to new customers. So how can a business update their website without spending a fortune, or disrupting their current online revenue stream?
When getting ready to update your own corporate website, take some time and objectively evaluate other websites from companies in your industry. If they’re offering web commerce, fill out a small order and see exactly how their systems work. Your own custom web design should take into account all the things you like and disliked about your competitor’s sites.
Remember that the main reason you’ve got a web site in the first place is so that customers can find you and do business with you. Be sure and consider who your customers are when you’re thinking about your site. If your average customer is elderly, or not particularly web savvy, you’ll want to keep things as simple as possible. A website that’s overloaded with bells and whistles can be confusing to some demographic segments. Don’t assume that your customers will have the same technological skills that you have.
In many ways, your website needs to reflect the Internet as a whole. You can’t just keep the same old site up for years on end and assume that it’s working. Your web presences needs to be dynamic and ever changing if you hope to stand out in your industry.
